Once again some clients have been putting pressure on archaeologists to act in the role of Principal Contractor. The HSE provided guidance on this back in 2015, and FAME have again sought their advice. This confirms that the PC role is not required where archaeological works are undertaken separately from construction, and where they are part of construction it is very unlikely that archaeological organisations would possess the experience of skills to undertake the role without exposing themselves to significant risk. Neither FAME or the HSE would expect archaeologists to undertake the role of PC. The full advice note can be read here- FAME CDM.
